Blog shows people behind statistics

The Weekly Toll: Death in the American Workplace is a memorial blog that tells the stories of people who die at work in the United States.

Up to 16 Americans die at work each day and the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities formed to remember them and lobby for improved safety conditions.

“Our lost loved ones were the very ones making your profit. We are not asking for more than we are entitled to, Our Right, The Right to a Safe and Healthful Workplace,” reads the USMWF’s website.

“We are the brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and children of America. Families and their losses are not a number or a statistic.”

Recognizing the reality

As I read about each life lost, I think about why it’s important to remember them. Last week I wrote about Steps for Life – a walk for workers who died in Metro Vancouver. Organizer Tanya Steele of ER Plus explained the importance of remembering together.

“It’s recognizing the reality of how many people are actually killed at work. I think it’s important for people to understand that people are still dying at work. That is ridiculous. People shouldn’t be dying at work.”

Thank you for including our Weekly Toll Blog and USMWF website on your site. We appreciate knowing that others are understanding our feeling and convictions that we need to recognize and remember our lost loved ones – regardless where they are from. Everyone deserves to go home after their shift-not to the morgue.
